Homemade dishes in pub

The "The Plume of Feathers - With Neil Morrissey" in Stoke-on-Trent, England, is a charming pub and restaurant located in the picturesque surroundings of Barlaston, a village near the city. It is a community project associated with the well-known British actor Neil Morrissey, who gained fame for his roles in series like "Men Behaving Badly" and as the voice of "Bob the Builder." Since its takeover and renovation by Morrissey and his team, the pub has become a popular spot for locals, visitors, and even celebrities, who appreciate its blend of traditional pub character, homemade food, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Dog and family friendly restaurant

The ambiance of the "Plume of Feathers" is a successful combination of rustic charm and modern coziness. The interior features dark wood, cozy seating areas, and an inviting bar, while the outdoor area overlooking the Trent and Mersey Canal and an adjacent bowling green is a particular attraction. Especially in the summer, the beer garden is a highlight where guests can enjoy a drink while taking in the tranquil canal landscape. The pub is also dog- and family-friendly, making it an ideal place for walkers or family outings, particularly given its proximity to the Wedgwood Estate and surrounding hiking trails.

Idyllic location in Stoke-on-Trent

The menu places a strong emphasis on homemade dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, earning the pub a good reputation. Particularly popular is the Morrissey Blonde Ale Pie, a hearty dish that incorporates the actor's namesake beer creation and impresses with its rich filling and crispy crust. The Crispy Belly Pork is often highlighted as well—juicy, with perfectly crackling skin and accompanied by seasonal vegetables. For dessert, the Sticky Toffee Pudding is a favorite, delighting many guests with its warm, sweet sauce and a hint of vanilla. In addition to the food, the pub offers an impressive selection of drinks, including Neil Morrissey's own beers like the Morrissey Blonde, a light, fruity ale that is particularly refreshing.

Popular pub with celebrities

Service at the "Plume of Feathers" is often described as friendly and warm, with staff striving to provide guests with a pleasant experience. However, on busy days, such as during special events or on weekends, there may be wait times, which some visitors have noted. Neil Morrissey himself occasionally appears on-site, whether in the kitchen or serving guests, adding a personal touch to the pub and providing many with an additional incentive to visit. The actor's commitment is also reflected in small details, such as memorabilia from his career adorning the walls.

Cozy atmosphere and beer garden

Guest opinions are mostly positive, although there are occasional criticisms. Many praise the quality of the food and the scenic location, while others note that service may struggle to keep up on hectic days or that the decor can seem a bit worn in places. Special events, such as the New Year's gala dinner organized by Morrissey or his 60th birthday in 2022 with celebrity guests, have brought additional attention to the pub. However, the Christmas dinner in 2023 was less successful, as some guests complained about long wait times and organizational issues.

No fault to us. The rail crossing was broken down , and the barriers were down would not go up .so we had to find a new root to get to the pub . We phone them sorry we would be late sorry to say we was 30 mins late for our table . When we arrived we were told we had to eat at the bar . We were asked to pay first. The starter (The Plume Mezze) looked delicious, but "warm lavash" was stone cold.

Service good but slow - nice if you have the afternoon to spare but took too long to get food out - as a table of two ordering a main upon arrival and a dessert straight after finishing the main, it took nearly 2 hrs

Wow, never knew Neil Morrissey owned a pub till it popped up on facebook a few weeks ago! As a huge fan of Neil since Rocky in "Boon" and of course "Men behaving badly" etc I pretty much watch everything he does. So although it was a 90 minute drive away me and my husband booked a table for today Sat 15/02/25. What a fabulous place kitted out with NM memorobilia which I took lots of pics😁 fantastic food, super friendly staff and super cosy atmosphere, we were really impressed and will definatly be coming back. My only big dissappointment was Neil Morrissey wasnt there☹️☹️☹️☹️Lol.. I hope to return on a day when he is, I would love to meet him, think hes lovely❤️Would highly reccommend "The Plume of feathers"..you wont be disappointed..but maybe slightly if Neil isnt there lol

Beautiful pub with great food. I had the Cypriot halloumi fries (3 thick slices) to start which tasted delicious, even the salad did too which it came with. For the main, I had the oak smoked chicken & cider braised ham hock pie - one of the best pies I have ever eaten. The pastry was perfect and light. The pie was so full with filling it was definitely worth the money! The smoked cheddar mash was on top of the pie and the cabbage with the chicken velouté tasted lovely too. For dessert, I had the crème brûlée - this was delicious and a generous portion. The shortcake biscuit on the side was a nice accompaniment. I have only scored 4 stars for service as I had to wait for my dessert for a while whilst the rest of the table had theirs with no explanation. I had to ask a waitress (who I hadn't seen before) who looked clueless and then proceeded to carry on in & out of the kitchen without acknowledging what I had asked and then seemed to remember when she saw me looking at her. I heard her mention at the bar something about "was it put through on the till?" with still no one updating me with what had happened. This did seem quite unprofessional as I just felt ignored but my dessert did eventually come out. A member of my family was also charged £3 extra for katsu curry sauce that never came out with their meal but this was took off the bill when we mentioned it. Apart from this, the lady who took our orders at the table was lovely and friendly. The men who took us to our table, set it up and got us a child seat were also lovely and friendly. Overall, the food quality was amazing and I would definitely come back again to try some of the other dishes. There are toilet facilities which were clean. Car parking was free with plenty of spaces available. There is also an accessibility ramp to the main entrance.

I felt compelled to write this review after a very postive experience in the restaurant last night. The lady that served us (brown hair) was vert charismatic and personable. She presented options and gave advice. The menu list was exceptional. The food it self was delicous. Big portions. On time and very reasonably priced. Would love to come back. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
